Why Your New Year’s Resolutions Keep Failing – And What You Can Do About It!

For many people, a new year feels like a fresh slate and a chance to quit or begin new and old habits. Don’t let 2024 be another year that you give up on your plans and fall back into negative or unwanted behaviours. It can be easily done, but you will never see improvements if you stay in your comfort zone! Push yourself this year to make positive changes to your life! Here are some of the reasons your resolutions are failing – and what you can do to change this.

1. Your resolutions are unrealistic

It’s important to make sure your goals for the start of the year are realistic. Don’t put pressure on yourself to quit 3 habits and take up 2 new ones. This can be unrealistic. Habits are usually formed around lifestyle and environment so it’s sometimes a more complicated process than just vowing to ‘do’ something. Start small and put plans in to place. For example, asking people for help, creating alternatives to your usual routines and making small changes can be the first steps to introducing new habits.

2. You’re rushing the process

It’s called a journey for a reason. Results don’t happen overnight, so remember to not be hard on yourself when change doesn’t happen immediately. For example, joining the gym with the goal of losing weight is a gradual change, and it won’t be noticeable to start with. This is what makes enjoying the process so important because you’re learning and developing as you go!

3. You’re giving up when it gets tough

When making a lifestyle change it can be very hard to stick to new routines or decisions. This is why the final outcome will be worth it for you! For example, withdrawals from smoking can make it even harder to stick to quitting. It’s at this point that you need to appreciate how far you’ve come and how close you are to your goal of quitting. Don’t allow yourself to go round in circles – there’s nothing you can’t do if you put your mind to it! Think about the person you want to be this time next year, and let that be your motivation to keep going.
We hope that everyone has a great 2024 and achieves all of their goals, no matter how big or small they may seem!
