If I asked you right now, “How financially healthy is your business out of 100?”, could you give me an honest answer?
For many business owners, the answer would probably be no.
And that does not mean they are bad business owners, Far from it.
The problem is that many business owners are measuring the wrong things.
They know their turnover, They know roughly how much money is sitting in the bank, They might even know how much they invoiced last month.
But do they really know how financially healthy the business is?
That is a different question.
Turnover Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
One of the biggest mistakes business owners make is treating sales as a measure of financial success.
You might have your best-ever month for sales and still have very little profit.
You could be bringing in £500,000 a year and still have cash flow problems.
You could even be growing quickly while your financial position is becoming weaker.
That is because turnover is only one part of the picture.
What matters is what happens to that revenue after your costs, taxes, debt, investments and other financial commitments are taken into account.
A business can look successful from the outside while being financially vulnerable behind the scenes.
Cash Flow Matters More Than You Think
Another common mistake is looking at the bank balance and assuming that tells you how well the business is doing.
It doesn’t.
Having £50,000 in the bank does not necessarily mean you have £50,000 available to spend.
Some of that money may already be committed to VAT, corporation tax, wages, suppliers, upcoming bills or other expenses.
Equally, a temporarily low bank balance does not necessarily mean your business is struggling.
This is why understanding cash flow is so important.
Cash flow gives you a clearer picture of what is coming into the business, what is going out and whether the business can comfortably meet its financial commitments.
Profit Is Not the Same as Sales
Sales are exciting.
Profit is what matters.
It is easy to celebrate when revenue increases by 20%, 30% or even 50%. But if your costs have increased at the same time, that growth might not be improving your bottom line.
For example, imagine your business generates an additional £100,000 in sales.
That sounds fantastic.
But if generating that extra £100,000 requires £90,000 of additional costs, the actual improvement is very different.
This is why business owners need to look beyond revenue and understand their profit margins, costs and overall profitability.
Growth is not automatically good growth.
The right kind of growth should strengthen the business, not simply make it bigger.
So, What Is Your Business Actually Worth?
There is another question many business owners struggle to answer:
What is my business actually worth?
Your bank balance cannot answer that.
Neither can your turnover.
Business value depends on a range of factors, including profitability, recurring revenue, assets, liabilities, customer concentration, systems, growth potential and how dependent the business is on its owner.
Understanding these numbers gives you a much clearer view of the business you have actually built.
And that becomes particularly important if you are thinking about selling, bringing in investors, expanding or eventually stepping away from the business.
The Fastest-Growing Business Owners Know Their Numbers
After working with hundreds of business owners, there is a clear pattern.
The businesses that are able to make better decisions and grow sustainably tend to have one thing in common:
They know their numbers.
You do not need to become an accountant.
You do not need to spend hours every week analysing spreadsheets.
But you do need to understand the key financial information that drives your business.
And this is where a good accountant can make a huge difference.
Your accountant should not simply tell you what happened last year.
They should help you understand what your numbers are telling you, where the risks are, where the opportunities are and what decisions you could make next.
Better information leads to better decisions.
Sometimes the Biggest Opportunity Isn’t Making More Money
This is perhaps the most important point.
When a business owner wants to improve their financial position, the instinct is often:
“We need to make more money.”
But sometimes that isn’t the answer.
The biggest opportunity could be understanding the money you already have.
Maybe your margins could be improved.
Maybe unnecessary costs are eating into your profit.
Maybe cash is tied up in the business.
Maybe you are paying more tax than necessary.
Maybe your pricing needs reviewing.
Or perhaps the business is financially stronger than you realise, but you simply don’t have the information to see it.
Before deciding what your business needs next, you need to understand where it stands today.
How Financially Healthy Is Your Business?
Knowing your business is financially healthy is not about having a perfect set of accounts.
It is about having enough clarity to answer questions such as:
- Is the business genuinely profitable?
- Is cash flow healthy?
- Are your margins where they should be?
- Are you prepared for upcoming tax and financial commitments?
- Are you relying too heavily on a small number of customers?
- Is the business becoming more valuable over time?
- Do you know what your biggest financial vulnerability is?
- Do you know what you should focus on next?
If you cannot confidently answer those questions, you are not alone.
But it is worth finding out.
